Are the deeds and words of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) before his mission began regarded as Sunnah, such as his marriage to Khadeejah (may Allaah be pleased with her)?.
Praise be to Allaah.
The basic principle is that the actions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) before his mission began are outside of the legislative Sunnah, and that we are not required to follow him or take him as an example in that regard, except in cases where sharee’ah – after his mission began – affirmed that something was prescribed or Islamically acceptable, either by way of being obligatory or mustahabb, such as fulfilling promises, helping the destitute, honouring guests, helping people when calamity strikes and so on. In that case we are obliged to follow his example, because it became a law for us after his Prophethood began, and not just because he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did it before he was a Prophet. Based on this, there are some actions that he did before his mission began that we are not obliged to follow, either because there is no proof that it is prescribed for us or because there are reports to show that it was abrogated after his mission began.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The things that happened before Prophethood are not mentioned as things to be followed or that are legislated, as is the case with his actions after Prophethood, because the Muslims are unanimously agreed that what is obligatory with regard to believing in him (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and following what he brought, is that which has to do with what happened after he became the Prophet.
Hence whoever stays away from Jumu’ah prayer and prayers in congregation, and lives alone in caves and mountains, where there is no Jumu’ah or prayer in congregation, and claims to be following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) because he was used to worship alone in the cave of Hira’ before his Prophethood, thus forsaking the acts of worship that were prescribed and enjoined by Allaah and His Messenger, and following the example of what he used to do before Prophethood, is wrong. That is because, after Allaah honoured him with Prophethood, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) no longer did what he used to do before that, of worshipping alone in the cave of Hira and so on.
None of his Sahaabah after him went to the Cave of Hira’, and they did not stay away from Jumu’ah prayer or prayers in congregation in isolated places, and none of them observed any kind of forty-day retreat, as some of the later Muslims did. Rather they worshipped Allaah by means of the prescribed acts of worship that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) ordained for them. End quote fromMajmoo’ al-Fataawa(18/10).
With regard to the muhaddithoon (scholars of hadeeth), they paid attention to what was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) at all times, even if it was before his mission began. That is part of the Sunnah according to the definition of the muhaddithoon, who regard everything that was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as Sunnah, so they narrated it in their books on that basis.
See:Af’aal al-Rasool sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam wa Dalaalatuhaa ‘ala al-Ahkaam, by Dr. Muhammad al-‘Aroosi (149).
And Allaah knows best.

For children, - An Islamic perspective: Divulging Secrets (12)Islam and Divulging Secrets

-
▌▌◙◙◙◙◙◙ ▌▌

:->

*- - - - -

Another factor that corrupts the tongue is divulging other people's secrets. This is considered bad in Islam.
Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: "When someone says something and goes away, what he said is left as a trust near the one who hears him." Prophet Muhammad (saw) also said: "What others tell you is entrusted to you."
Imam Hasan (as) has been narrated as saying: "It is an act of treason to divulge your brethren's secrets."
13 - Fake Promise:
One of the factors that corrupt the tongue is making fake promises upon which one does not act. Acting upon what you promise is one of the signs of divine men. We read the following in Noble Qur'an:
"O' ye who believe! Fulfill (all) obligations." [Sura Al-Ma'ida 5:1]
Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: "Making promises is a part of religion."
Allah (SWT) has mentioned in Noble Qur'an Prophet Isma'il (Ishmael) to be strictly true to what he promised: "Also mention in the Book (the story of) Isma'il: He was (strictly) true to what he promised, and he was an apostle (and) a Prophet." [Sura Maryam 19:54]
14 - False swearing or Statements:
Lying is a great sin. It will result in the loss of one's honor. Many Qur'anic verses and traditions outline the wickedness of lying. Abu Sa'eed was quoted to have heard the Prophet Muhammad (saw) supplicate to Allah (SWT) as follows: "O' Allah! Please purify my heart from hypocrisy, purify me from acts of fornication, and purify my tongue from lying."
Imam Baqir (as) said: " Lying will destroy man's faith."
Imam Ali (as) said: "No man shall taste faith unless he avoids lying, be it serious or as a joke."
A man told Prophet Muhammad (saw): "O' Prophet of Allah (SWT)! Would a believer commit a sexual sin?" He (saw) said: "Maybe sometimes." The man asked: "Would a believer tell a lie?" Prophet Muhammad (saw) answered: "Never."
Allah (SWT) the Exalted said in Noble Qur'an: "It is those who believe not in the Signs of Allah that forge falsehood: it is they who lie!" [Sura An-Nahl 16:105]
It was quoted on the authority of Imam Hasan Askari (as): "All sins are stored in a house. The key to that house is lying." This implies that if one lies he will fall into sin.
Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: "One only tells lies because of his feeling of being lowly."
On the other hand, honesty is rooted in a feeling of self-security and confidence. One day Hajjaj extended his sermon when he was lecturing on the pulpit. A man cried from the crowd: "It is time for prayer. Cut it short. Neither time will stop in respect for you nor will Allah (SWT) accept your apology." Hajjaj became upset about this open statement in public and had the man imprisoned. When the man's relatives went to see Hajjaj and told him that the man is insane, Hajjaj said that he had to confess to this fact himself. They went to see the man and told him to confess to being insane to be freed. The man said: "Allah (SWT) has created me healthy and intelligent. I am not mad. Why should I falsely confess to being insane?" Then Hajjaj was told about what the man said. Hajjaj respected his honesty and freed him.

►● ╠▓╣ ►●

Question:
I have a question about Surah 43, ayah 18 which reads;
Yusuf Ali:
(043:018) Is then one brought up among trinkets, and unable to give a clear account in a dispute (to be associated with God)?
In the online english commentaries i read online i read how commentators ( the ones i have acces too , like tafsir ibn kathir and tafsir jalalyn ) interpretate this verse to mean that women are weak in mind and cannot express themselves clearly in a debate or argue properly. Unfortunate i have no knowledge of the arabic language ( since i am a Dutch convert to islam ) , and i really wonder if this is true interpretation and intented meaning of this verse. In the translation of the Holy Quran by M. ABdel Haleem i read his footnote on this verse that it only mentions the view "of the pre-islamic arabs" on women. Other brothers have told me that their are commentaries which interpretate the words of Surah 43, Ayah 18 to refer to the idols instead of women. Dear scholars i would like to know which interptetation is the most correct and most reliable and supported by the context. Does this verse refer to idols or women ? And does this verse really describe women in a negative way as some suggest who interpretate this verse to be a reference to women. Dear scholars I hope you can this question for me.
Answer:
In the name of Allah Most Merciful Most Compassionate
Assalamu alaykum
Thank you for your question. It is often useful to interpreting a verse to look at the context in which the verse is mentioned.
'Yet they attribute to some of His servants a share with Him (in his godhead)! truly is man a blasphemous ingrate avowed! What! has He taken daughters to Himself of what He Himself creates and chosen you to have sons? And if one of them hath tidings of that which he likeneth to the Beneficent One, his countenance becometh black and he is full of inward rage. Is then one brought up among trinkets, and unable to give a clear account in a dispute (to be associated with Allah)? And they make the angels-- them who are the servants of the Beneficent Allah-- female (divinities). What! did they witness their creation? Their evidence shall be written down and they shall be questioned.' (43:15-19)
These are the verses in question, with the specific verse being inquired about, in bold.
As is quite evident the verses are discussing the pagan Arab belief that Allah had daughters. The Qur'an here debates this claim with them on a number of levels, each appealing to a particular part of the listener's heart and mind.
The pagans acknowledged that there was one supreme Deity, as mentioned in verse 9 of this very Sura, 'If thou wert to question them, 'Who created the heavens and the earth?' They would be sure to reply, 'they were created by (Him), the Exalted in Power, Full of Knowledge'. So what need has He to have daughters and what is the connection between them? Here a number of arguments have been presented.
1. 'They made for him a part from among His servants.'
This is a clear contradiction. A child is a part of the parent which then detaches itself upon birth. Are these daughters a physical part of Him that has detached itself when He gave birth to them? This is impossible as it leads to the conclusion that God actually has parts, and is therefore subject to space and time. Anyone subject to space and time cannot be the creator of the two and what they contain. The detailed exposition of this statement is studied in the books of Islamic theology and will not be expanded on here.
Did this child originate in time? If so then how can it be a god as it is more like a thing created, like the rest of creation? Or perhaps it has always been there? If it was always there, then how can it be termed a child?
There are actually many rational arguments that may be presented against this, and it is thus safe to say conclude that the very declaration, that god has children, is impossible.
2. Is not all perfection for God?
A second argument presented in these verses is less of an intellectual argument, and more of an emotional one. Often emotive statements are more likely to move the listener than a dry logical statement.
Daughters were clearly inferior to sons, in the eyes of the Arabs, as in most traditional societies. Life was tough and families had need for physically strong sons that would bear the burdens of life and see to the well being of the family. Life was also violent, and families and societies were in need of men to defend them against their enemies. Life was a constant struggle against unjust rulers and systems, and families were in need of able sons that could stand before a crowd, be taken seriously and argue to attain justice or fight ferociously if denied. This is why, as mentioned in the above quoted verses, when they were given the news, termed good news in the Qur'anic expression 'bush-shira', that they had a daughter, they would get enraged.
If God deserves every trait of perfection, then how is it that they have chosen only sons for themselves and yet assigned daughters to Him? Is this not actually belittling God as they deem themselves too good for what they then ascribe to God?
This is, of course, not a rational argument as assigning sons and daughters to God is impossible either way. Rather this is to hit at the emotions of the listeners and to show the complete foolishness of these people who, not only is their belief baseless, but it is also senseless. Yet in the name of this senseless, proof-less belief they fight reason when it comes to them and hold their heads up in pride.
People who are proud are hard to convince through ration, but their emotions can certainly be stirred. This is why the next verse brings to forth the petty nature of daughters in the eyes of these people, 'Is then one brought up among trinkets, and unable to give a clear account in a dispute (to be associated with God)?' Girls were decorated with jewellery and pretty dresses from a young age, indicating their innate, delicate nature. They were also not deemed strong enough in traditional societies to stand up and fight against injustice. Why would they ascribe something, which in their own eyes is of no use to them, to God? It is for this powerful, rhetorical purpose that the verse was revealed. As is quite evident, this verse is very effective at showing the listener what a complete mockery these people have made of their religion, and is likely to cause doubts in the hearts of its adherents. The Arabic expression is even more derisive and hard-hitting than the English equivalent.
3. Did you see this happen?
The final argument against their claim is, 'did you see it happen?' Something that makes no sense to the mind, or to the heart, can only be adopted if it was personally witnessed, so the final, conclusive, statement in this exchange is, 'did they witness their creation?'
4. Watch out!
These clear verses are finally concluded with a threat. If people are not moved by clear arguments, they might be moved by a look at the consequences. 'Their evidence shall be written down and they shall be questioned.'
In matters of belief the Qur'an urges people to reflect on reality and reach conclusions that are sound. Incorrect conclusions are shown to be wrong with a variety of arguments. Different people are moved by different things, the various arguments employed are intended to move everyone with what is appropriate for them.
It is quite clear then that the purpose of this verse was not to dictate how we should look towards females or to show their standing in Allah's eyes. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) actually showed people that it was a great blessing to be given daughters. 'Whosoever takes care of two daughters until they come of age will come on judgment day, with me and him like these two' - and he held his two fingers together. (Muslim). He also said, 'The most complete of the believers in faith are the most excellent of them in character and the best of them are those who are best to their wives.' (Tirmidhi)
The Qur'an is explicit that men and women are equal in the bliss that is promised them,
And their Lord hath accepted of them, and answered them: "Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female: Ye are members, one of another: Those who have left their homes, or been driven out therefrom, or suffered harm in My Cause, or fought or been slain,- verily, I will blot out from them their iniquities, and admit them into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath;- A reward from the presence of Allah, and from His presence is the best of rewards.(3:195)
For Muslim men and women,- for believing men and women, for devout men and women, for true men and women, for men and women who are patient and constant, for men and women who humble themselves, for men and women who give in Charity, for men and women who fast (and deny themselves), for men and women who guard their chastity, and for men and women who engage much in Allah's praise,- for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward. (33.35)
The Qur'an is also clear that each, male and female, helps the other to do good,
The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practise regular charity, and obey Allah and His Apostle. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise. (9.71)
To end where we started, it is always important to look at the context in which a statement has been made before one can begin addressing the intent of the speaker.
We ask Allah Most High to bestow on us a deep understanding of His book and enable us to implement it in our lives. Amin.

• Shaykh Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy upon him, answering the
advocates of permissiveness and necessity of intermixing between the
sexes:
In answer to the Director of San'aa' University, Abdul-'Azeez
Al-Muqaalih, who wrote an article in As-Siyaasah newspaper in
24/7/1404 AH, calling for intermixing between the sexes in educational
institutions, arguing that both men and women used to perform prayer
in the same mosque during the lifetime of the Prophet, sallallaahu
'alayhi wa sallam, Shaykh Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy upon him,
said:
There is no doubt that this call represents a serious violation of the
Islamic Sharee'ah )Islamic legislation(, because the Sharee'ah does
not call for intermixing between the sexes but rather forbids it and
stresses such forbiddance. Allaah The Almighty Says )what means(:
•}And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as ]was[ the
display of the former times of ignorance.{]Quran 33:33[
•}O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the
believers to bring down over themselves ]part[ of their outer
garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be
abused. And ever is Allaah Forgiving and Merciful.{]Quran 33:58[
•}And tell the believing women to reduce ]some[ of their vision and
guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that
which ]necessarily[ appears thereof and to wrap ]a portion of[ their
head covers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to
their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons,
their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their
sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or
those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are
not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp
their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And
turn to Allaah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might
succeed.{]Quran 24:31[
•}And when you ask ]his wives[ for something, ask them from behind a
partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.{]Quran
33:53[
There are many other verses in the Quran calling women to remain in
their houses for fear of temptation, as long as there is no necessity
for them to leave the house.
It was narrated on the authority of Usaamah ibn Zayd, may Allaah be
pleased with him, that the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam,
said:"I am not leaving behind me a more harmful temptation for men
than women."]Al-Bukhaari and Muslim[
It was also narrated on the authority of Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri, may
Allaah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa
sallam, said:"The world is sweet and green )alluring(; and verily,
Allaah is making you succeed each other, generation after generation
in order to see how you act. So, beware of this world and beware of
women, for they were the first trial of Banu Israel."]Muslim[
It is known that when male and female students sit at the same desk,
this causes temptation, particularly when the female students do not
adhere to the Hijaab )Islamic covering(. There was no intermixing
between men and women during the lifetime of the Prophet, sallallaahu
'alayhi wa sallam -- neither in the mosque nor in markets; rather,
rows of women were always behind those of men. The Prophet,
sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:"The best of the men's rows )in
prayer( is the first row and the worst is the last; and the best of
the woman's rows is the last and the worst is the first."The Prophet,
sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, also used to command his Companions to
wait for a while until the women had left the mosque. He also
commanded women not to walk in the middle of the road, and used to go
to the women to preach to them after the men at the conclusion of the
'Eed prayer because they were at a distance, unable to hear the
Khutbah )sermon(.
• Shaykh Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy upon him, also said in answer
to Al-Jazeerah newspaper, issued in 15/4/1403 AH, where some writers
suggested mixed education in elementary schools:
This is a very dangerous and evil suggestion. It was narrated on the
authority of 'Abdullaah ibn 'Amr ibn Al-'Aas, may Allaah be pleased
with him, that the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam,
said:"Command your children to perform prayer when they are seven
years old, and beat them for )not offering( it when they are ten, and
separate them in beds."]Abu Daawood[
The Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, commanded us to prevent
boys and girls from sharing the same bed after the age of ten because
such intermixing may lead to immorality.
• Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy upon him, was asked the
following question:"I am a young man from a rich family. I study at a
mixed school and this helped me establish shameful relationships with
girls. I have committed many sins and I want to know what I should do
to get rid of my misery. Is there repentance for me? What are the
conditions of repentance?"
In his response to this question, Shaykh ibn 'Uthaymeen, may Allaah
have mercy upon him, called upon rulers to protect their people from
the causes of evil and temptation, particularly the Fitnah )trial( of
intermixing between the sexes. In addition to sincere intention and
true determination, this can be achieved through establishing schools,
institutes, and universities only for girls. Women have the right to
learn just as men, but they must be separated from men.
Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported, "A
woman came to the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam,
and said, "O Messenger of Allaah! Only men benefit from your
teachings, so please devote some of your time to us; a day on which
we may come to you so that you may teach us about what Allaah The
Almighty has taught you." The Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam,
said:"Gather on such-and-such a day at such-and-such a place."They
gathered and he went to them and taught them what Allaah The Almighty
had taught him". ]Al-Bukhaari[
This apparently proves that a special place should be dedicated to the
education of women, since the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam,
did not tell them to attend with men.
• Dr. Muhammad Ismaa'eel Al-Muqaddim said in his book 'Awdat Al-Hijaab:
The example of those who underestimate the matter of prohibited
intermixing between men and women under the pretext that they are
habituated to adherence to chastity and virtue, is that of a people
who put an amount of gunpowder near a lighted fire and then claim that
there will not be an explosion because there is a warning written on
the gunpowder that it should not burn. This is merely illusion that is
removed from reality because it contradicts the nature of things.
Those who invented intermixing are now suffering from its catastrophic
results and calling to have it cancelled.
