Welcome to Islam, - Islam is not merely idea

No Muslim can accept the categorization of Islam as merely an “idea”. Islam is based on the word of God, revealed syllable by syllable to Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, )may Allaah exalt his mention(, 1400 years ago. Thus, it is not merely idea; rather it is an idea, ideology, the Truth and a complete way of life. As the Quran states )what means(:"Whoever wishes for a way of life other that Islam, never will it be accepted from him and in the Hereafter he will be amongst the losers."]Quran 3: 85[
Allaah mentions that this religion has been completed and perfected, and has no need for alteration or adjustment )what means(: "This day I completed your religion for you and perfected My favor upon you and chosen for your way of life Islam."]Quran 3:85[
The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, also said:"There is not one thing that shall bring you closer to the Paradise and away from the Fire without me having informed you of it, and there is not one thing that will take you away from Paradise and towards the Fire except that I have warned you about it."
It is true that Islam does not draw a distinction between the "inner" and "outer" aspects of life, between belief and actions, religion and politics; in reality, such distinctions are fallacious. Man's beliefs are the foundations and prime motivators for actions, for what is held to be true on the inside must manifest itself outwardly.
Indeed, the very first task given to Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was to correct the false beliefs. It was not that the pagan Arabs did not believe in Allaah, or God, the Creator. In fact, the Quran tells Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, )what means(:"If you ask them who sends down rain from the sky, and gives life therewith to the earth after its death? They would certainly say 'Allaah!' Say: 'All praise and thanks be to Allaah!' Nay! Most of them have no sense."]Quran 29:63[
The pagan Arabs used to worship Allaah, pray to Him and sacrifice to Him in times of need and distress, as did the Jews and Christians, and they even claimed to love Him, but Allaah rejected their actions and referred to them as ‘senseless’, ‘astray’ and ‘disbelievers’. Hence, this is the reality concerning most of the men and Jinn; they claim to believe in Allaah and worship Allaah, but what they believe about Him is incorrect and the way they worship Him is incorrect. The Quran says )what means(:"Most of them do not believe in Allaah except while joining partners with Him."]Quran 12:106[
There is one common cause for this rejection, that is, thinking and speaking about Allaah without knowledge, and thus ascribing to Him that which should not be ascribed to Him, such as sons, or daughters, or human qualities and weaknesses; claiming that some of the creation possess His powers and abilities, or by claiming that He, the Majestic, is pleased by some action that in fact angers Him, or that He is angered by some action that in fact pleases Him.
Thus, the idol worshippers call upon that which can neither benefit nor harm them; the Christians call upon Jesus, may Allaah exalt his mention; the Jews believe their racial origins guarantee His good pleasure; and there are those who believe that power and wealth are means of success -- all have put their faith and trust in something in vain. This in itself is a great evil, for they have only wasted their time and effort, yet this is least of the evil consequences.
As for that which is most severe -- those who have fallen into associating partners with Allaah -- have earned His anger and wrath, and upon them shall fall humiliation in this life and a most terrible fate in the next. The Quran says )what means(:"Surely Allaah will not forgive al-Shirk )the association of partners with Him(, but He forgives sins less than that of whomever He wishes."]Quran 4:48[
So Shirk or ascribing partners to Allaah )whatever form it may take( is an unforgivable sin, because it is the source of all evil, the greatest injustice, the worst oppression and wrongdoing. For, if one is unafraid of speaking about Allaah without knowledge )and this knowledge is attained only through Him, for He is the Best Knower of Himself and His will( and that which pleases and displeases Him, then what will one be afraid of speaking about ignorantly?
Anyone witnessing the destructive forces of nature and the untold misfortunes and miseries over which Allaah alone has ultimate power and control, both in this life and the next, would realize that Allaah is the most worthy of being feared. Similarly, anyone contemplating the miraculous order, precision and symbiosis within the earth and universe, must realize the unparalleled knowledge and wisdom of its Creator.
If one is heedless of transgressing the laws of Allaah, and attaches little or no importance to them, or worse considers them bad, evil, and outdated, then what of the laws conceived in the limited minds of men? If one is ungrateful to his Lord, the Provider of all, then of what little consequence to such a one is ingratitude to the creation? If one denies the rights and dues of Allaah, which are the most worthy of being fulfilled, then what rights and dues will such a person be fearful of denying?
Imagine the case of a fictional worker in a company owned and run by you, who believes you are the lavatory cleaner and the lavatory cleaner is the director! Would there not be evil results? Would you tolerate such a person? If so, for how long? Now envisage this fool teaching this to others and insisting on it, so that the majority of the company came to believe it, ignoring your orders and prohibitions and inventing their own rules, making the lavatory cleaner who is deaf and dumb their guide!
The true causes of the evils that beset mankind are disbelief, sinfulness and ingratitude to Allaah, as the Quran says )what means(:"And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much."]Quran 42:30[
The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said:"There is none who has a greater sense of Ghayrah )a feeling of great fury and anger when one's honor and prestige is injured or challenged( than Allaah, and so He has forbidden shameful deeds and sins. And there is none who likes to be praised more than Allaah does."]Al-Bukhaari[
Allaah is more infuriated by the disobedience of His slave than a man of honor who finds his wife fornicating with another man. So how is His fury with those who insult Him by ascribing rivals and partners with Him, while He is Glorious above such things! In addition, the evil consequences are not limited to this life, as the Quran says )what means(:"Verily, those who disbelieved and die while they are disbelievers, the whole earth full of gold will not be accepted from anyone of them even if they offered it as a ransom. For them is a painful torment and they will have no helpers."]Quran 3:91[
The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, explained:"On the Day of Judgment, the disbeliever will be asked: 'Suppose you had as much gold as to fill the earth, would you offer it to ransom yourself from the hell-fire?' He will reply: 'Yes!' Then it will be said to him: 'You were asked for something easier than that, that you should join none in worship with Allaah, and submit yourself to Him, but you refused.'"]Al-Bukhaari[
The message of all the Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, is one and the same )which means(:"Verily, We have sent to every nation a Messenger, saying: 'Worship Allaah and avoid false objects of worship.'"]Quran 16:36[
Indeed this is the very purpose for which Allaah created mankind, as He Says )what means(:"I did not create the Jinn and mankind except for My worship."]Quran 51:56[
Hence, Shirk )ascribing partners to Allaah( is in contradiction to the reason for which Allaah has created us, and the purpose for which we exist -- which is to single out Allaah for worship, avoiding all false deities and to worship Him completely, with sacrifice, supplication, submission, subjugation, obedience, compliance; and with love, fear, hope, trust and reliance upon Him, seeking only His pleasure and not the admiration of His creatures; and to do all of that according to that which was revealed to His last and final Messenger Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and not according to whims, desires and mere conjecture.
Furthermore, of immediate relevance to the discussion, are those qualities, unique to Allaah, that single Him out, such as "Al-Haakim," )The Judge(; "Al-Hakeem," )The Wise( and "Al-'Aleem," )The All Knowing(. Not only is Allaah the Creator, Controller and Sustainer, He is also the Sole Possessor of the wisdom and knowledge, to legislate for mankind and to determine what is good and what is evil, what is right and what is wrong, what is lawful and what is prohibited; thus extending to the laws we should judge by and the social, economic and political system we should utilize. The Quran says )what means(:"And no partner in legislating has He - He is Alone."]Quran 18:60[
Allaah admonished the Jews and Christians and called them disbelievers, for )which means(:"…taking their priests and rabbis as lords besides Allaah."]Quran 9:31[
If Allaah blamed the Jews and Christians for accepting changes and alterations made by the men learned in the Scripture and Divine legislation, for making the forbidden allowed and vice versa, then how about those who accept such actions from every Tom, Dick and Harry, who have no scripture, no wisdom and only pure speculation, whims and desires?
Islam makes no distinction between outward and inner, private and public life. People should not adopt ways of the worst error: disobedience to and rebellion against Allaah and not commit the unforgivable sin of ascribing partners to Him.

Welcome to Islam, - Islam, its meaning and message

One of the serious problems of the present age is that the old norms have failed to convince and hold our Muslim youth, and we are facing a new era of Ignorance, a fresh period of Jaahiliyyah, as the Arabs would call it. Whether this is because Western values have an intrinsic fault, or that some affliction has infected our communications media, the fact remains that we are facing a real crisis throughout the Western world.
This process is the opposite of the great 18thcentury CE movement, which was called the Enlightenment, when Western Europe andNorth Americaseemed to be shaking off their age-old prejudices.
For Muslims, it also forms a contrast to the startling period when the Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, )may Allaah exalt his mention( led the arid Arab peninsula, out of political and social chaos, into the leadership of the known world. In fact, wherever Islam entered during its earliest phase, “the Dark Ages” in human history, asWestern Europeknew the Middle Ages, simply ceased to exist.
The Islamic Era:
Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, established Islam, followed by the slow development of the Islamic State or commonwealth, during the decade from the year 622 CE until his death in 632 CE. By that time, instead of being a peninsula of mutually warring tribes,Arabiahad become a commonwealth, which raised new standards for the world to adopt.
]From: "Islam, its Meaning and Message" - By Khurshid Ahmad
This occurred within the first ten years after the Hijrah or Emigration of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and his Companions, may Allaah be pleased with them, from the trying circumstances in Makkah to the new capital of Yathrib or Al-Madeenah as this city came to be called, 200 miles to the north in an oasis on the ancient caravan route to Syria.
The life of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, thus lasted from the year of his birth 570 CE to 632 CE. He was called an-Nabi al-Ummi or the 'Unlettered Prophet' in the ]Quran 7: 157- 158[.
What does this term mean? It means simply that Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, did not receive a formal education, nevertheless he led his people to a better way of life. He was most cultured and articulate, since he had been trained in the purest Arabic speech by his nurse, with whose tribe he lived as an infant in the desert.
Almost immediately after his death, Islam spread around the world, to take over the Sassanid empire of Persia, the southern tier of the Byzantine empire, and as far West as Spain and Morocco on the Atlantic. By the year 711 CE, only eighty years after the death of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, Muslims were on the borders ofFrancein the far West, and enteringIndiaon the East.
Muslims were termed the 'middle nation' ]Quran 2: 143[, the community which was to follow the middle and moderate path in all matters, that aim of both Greek and Islamic society, and of any moderate one on earth.
Basic Purpose:
The Muslim's basic purpose in life is to worship God in His Oneness )Monotheism( and not through the trinity of the Christians, or the duality and idolatry of other religions. A Muslim works through the power of God's transcendence; in the words of King Arthur, as this Celtic leader was preparing to enter the next world, he admonished his Knights of the Round Table: "For what are men better than sheep or goats, that nourish a blind life within the brain, if, knowing God, they lift not hands in prayer both for themselves and those that call them friends?"

Welcome to Islam, - Penal laws in Islam

In Islam, there are specific penal laws for major crimes. The underlying principles here are the following. Firstly, no matter how ideal a religion is, there will be some forms of transgression by some persons. Secondly, there are major crimes that need major punishments.
The major transgressions, according to Islam, are murder, highway robbery, theft, adultery, and false accusation of adultery. These transgressions affect the individual and the society and create a state of confusion and insecurity.
The principles that govern penal laws in Islam are:
1. The punishment should be effective enough to deter the crime.
2. Punishment is necessary, though disliked.
3. Punishment is a means to social security.
The Penalty for Murder:
As for murder, the Islamic punishment for intentional murder is the execution of the murderer. Pardoning is possible if the closest relative of the murdered person accepts blood-money. However, if murder is unintentional, blood-money takes the place of the death sentence.
In countries that have abolished capital punishment, we notice that such a cancellation has ended up with more murders and more murderers. Any toleration of murders will encourage more murders and the result is the loss of security.
In countries that apply the death sentence for murder, one notices that such a sentence minimises the cases of murder. When a person knows that he will be killed if he kills, he will think at least a thousand times before he considers committing a murder.
Islam legislated killing as a punishment for murder fourteen centuries ago. Allaah is the Most Merciful: man need not wait centuries until sociologists finish their research on the subject or until parliaments vote for a solution!
Allaah, through the Holy Quran, shows us the right way that provides society with security: intentional murder is punished by killing the murderer. Although killing is a severe punishment, it is fair because murder itself is an even more severe action and such a punishment is necessary because without it more murders are encouraged.
The Penalty for Highway Robbery:
Another crime that is specified in the Quran is highway robbery. The punishment of a highway robber may take one of these forms depending on the seriousness of the case. The robber may be put to death, or crucified, or have his hand and leg cut off on opposite sides, or imprisoned.
Of course, highway robbers threaten the security of the society, endanger the lives of individuals, and rob persons of their money. If such persons are punished softly, the result is more and more robbers as is the case of countries that deal with such criminals leniently.
On the contrary, in a country like Saudi Arabia, which applies Islamic penal laws, we find that the cases of murder and robbery are the fewest in the whole world. We must remember that the function of the punishment is double: the criminal himself is punished for what he has committed and other persons in the same community are warned not to commit similar crimes.
The Penalty for Theft:
The other crime that is specified in the Quran is theft. As we know, Islam emphasises the individual's safety with regard to his life, property, and honour. Any threat to these three entities is severely punished by Islam. A person who kills another or robs him is severely punished because this is the only way to guarantee security for every individual.
Concerning theft, Islam legislates cutting the thief's hand off as a maximum punishment and under certain conditions. In countries that apply this punishment, like Saudi Arabia, we notice that theft is a very rare occurrence. The judge decides the seriousness of the case and decides if the thief should get the maximum penalty or not, according to certain conditions and restrictions.
When a person knows that he will lose his hand if he uses it in stealing, this makes stealing a rare possibility. The implication of such a punishment is this: each organ in the body must be used cleanly, honourably, and legally. The function of the hand is not stealing. If the hand is used to threaten other people, it is a dangerous hand and the judge is entitled to reconsider its existence.
The other implication of cutting the hand off is to give the thief and other people a permanent example and a continuous reminder of the fate of thieves. In countries that merely imprison the thief, the thief himself may steal again after being released from prison.
The Penalty for Adultery:
Another major crime in Islamic law is adultery. The Holy Quran tells us that the adulterer or the adulteress is to be flogged one hundred stripes while being witnessed by some people. The idea of letting some people witness the carrying out of the punishment is to add to the psychological effect of flogging on the culprit. If the adulterer or adulteress is married, the penalty is stoning to death, according to certain strict conditions.
The position of Islam with regard to adultery is clear. If adultery is punished softly or not punished at all, the result will be destructive to the family structure. The family, according to Islam, is the best structure that secures happiness, security, loyalty, and belongingness to the husband, the wife, and children. Therefore, this family must be protected from all dangers and threats. One threat to the family surely comes from adultery. That is why Islam punishes adultery severely in order to penalise offenders and to deter others.
In countries that are lenient with adultery, before and after marriage, the result is obvious for all of us. Those countries have frequent divorces, frequent cases of rape, countless cases of nervous breakdown caused by divorce, murders accompanying rape, and a series of psychological and mental complications.
According to Islam, all physical needs must be organised and all psychological needs must be guaranteed. Eating is a need, but it must be regulated; otherwise, a person may starve or explode out of overeating. The same applies to the sexual need; this need must be satisfied and organised at the same time. The only safe solution is the Islamic one: sexual satisfaction through marriage only. This solution has no single bad side effect. On the contrary, free sex satisfies the sexual need, but it has a countless number of ill-effects that harm the family, adults, and children.
The Penalty for False Accusation of Adultery:
The other major crime is the false accusation of a woman of adultery. The punishment of a false accuser is flogging him eighty stripes and not admitting evidence from him throughout his life.
This severe punishment for a false accusation of adultery is justifiable on the basis that this accusation has a destructive influence on the woman involved. If she is married, she may be divorced in addition to the disgrace that will follow her and her family. If she is not married, this accusation may block the way of marriage in front of her.
As we have said, Islam puts high emphasis on an individual's life, property, and honour. Any threat to a person's life, property, or honour is severely punished by Islamic law.
Of course, offences are more than five. Those five mentioned here are the major ones. Because murder, robbery, theft, adultery, and false accusation of adultery are the major crimes, the Quran mentions them and specifies the punishment for each. Other crimes and offences are punished according to what the judge sees in the light of the spirit and text of penal laws.
As we can see, Islam is not a system of prayers and fasting only. It is a system that regulates worship, penal laws, marriage and divorce, inheritance, taxes, eating, clothing, and social relations. In brief, Islam is a comprehensive system that regulates all the aspects of human life, guides man to the best solutions to his major problems, and helps man to avoid problems in the first place.

Throughout his life, our Prophet (saas) called rulers and administrators to Islam by sending messengers and letters to them. Historical sources tell us that some of them heeded the call immediately and that others refused to do so and allied themselves with his enemies. Our Prophet (saas) invited Perviz ibn Hurmuz, the kisra at that time, by sending Abdullah ibn Hudhayfah to him as a messenger. But Ibn Hurmuz refused to embrace Islam and, in fact, displayed hostility toward the Muslims. He even went so far as to send two messengers to tell the Muslims to submit to him.
Our Prophet (saas) first invited these two messengers to accept Islam. Then he left them, saying that he would inform them of his decision the next day. 71 At that time, he told the messengers what Allah had revealed to him: "Allah will send many tribulations to Khosrow by means of his son Shireveyh, who will kill him in such-and-such a month, on such-and-such a night, at such-and-such an hour." 72 He also told them: "Tell Khosrow that my religion and my empire will reach far beyond his kingdom. And tell him: "Enter Islam, and I will confirm you in what you have and appoint you king over the people of Yemen." 73
The ambassadors then returned to Yemen and described what had happened. Badhan was impressed and said: "We will see what happens next. If what he said is true, then he is the Prophet whom Allah has sent." 74 He then turned to his men and asked what they thought of our Prophet (saas). The ambassadors, who had been greatly impressed by him, said: "We never saw a ruler more majestic, more fearless, and less guarded than him. He walked humbly among the people."
Badhan waited for a while to see if our Prophet's (saas) words about the kisra had come true. After some time had passed, he announced that he was certain that our Prophet (saas) had been sent by Allah. According to the hadiths and other historical documents, shortly Badhan received a letter written by Shivereyh: "I killed Khosrow. When this letter reaches you, take the people's oath of allegiance in my name. Regarding what Khosrow wrote to you, wait and do nothing until there is a new command from me." 75
When Badhan and his men worked it out, they realized that the Prophet (saas) had told the truth. 76 He believed after this great miracle and accepted Islam. He was followed by the Yemeni Abna. 77 Badhan became the first governor appointed by the Prophet (saas) and the first Persian governor to be a Muslim. 78
